How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price increment in forex trading. For most currency pairs, one pip equals 0.0001 of the exchange rate, except for pairs involving the Japanese Yen where one pip equals 0.01. For Taiwan traders trading USD-based pairs, understanding pip value is crucial for risk management.
Pip Value Formula
The general formula is: Pip Value = (1 Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For example, if trading EUR/USD at 1.1000 with a standard lot (100,000 units), pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = 9.09 USD. For USD/JPY at 110.00 with a standard lot, pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) × 100,000 = 9.09 USD. Always quote pip value in your account currency (USD).
Examples for Taiwan Traders
If you deposit 500 USD via Skrill and trade one micro lot (1,000 units) of GBP/USD at 1.3000, pip value = (0.0001 / 1.3000) × 1,000 = 0.077 USD. A 50-pip stop-loss would risk 3.85 USD. Using USDT deposits, the calculation remains identical. Taiwan traders should always calculate pip value before entering a trade to avoid over-leveraging.
