How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the smallest price change in forex, usually 0.0001 for most pairs except JPY pairs (0.01). For Sri Lanka traders trading USD-based pairs like EUR/USD or GBP/USD, one pip equals 0.0001 of the quote currency.
The Pip Value Formula
Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) in EUR/USD at 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.909. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.0909.
Example for Sri Lanka Traders
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill and trade USD/JPY. USD/JPY at 150.00: one pip = 0.01. Pip value for a mini lot (10,000 units) = (0.01 / 150.00) × 10,000 = 0.6667 JPY. Convert to USD: 0.6667 / 150.00 = $0.0044 per pip. This tiny value shows why lot size matters. With a micro lot, pip value is $0.00044. Always use a pip calculator on your broker’s platform.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers for Sri Lanka traders provide a pip calculator in their trading platform (MT4/MT5). Enter your currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). The tool shows pip value instantly. This helps you set stop-loss and take-profit levels accurately.
