How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip and Why Does It Matter?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price move in forex. For most pairs, one pip equals 0.0001 (e.g., EUR/USD from 1.1000 to 1.1001). For JPY pairs, one pip equals 0.01. Knowing pip value helps you calculate potential profit or loss per trade.
The Pip Value Formula
Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. If your account is in USD, the result is in USD. For example: EUR/USD at 1.1000, standard lot (100,000 units): (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.909 per pip. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.0909 per pip.
Solomon Islands Example with USD Account
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill and trade GBP/USD at 1.2500 with a mini lot. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) x 10,000 = $0.80 per pip. If the trade moves 20 pips in your favor, you earn $16.00. Always calculate pip value before entering a trade to set appropriate stop-loss levels.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip calculators. You simply enter the currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). This is especially useful for Solomon Islands traders who may not be familiar with manual calculations. Bookmark your broker's calculator or use trusted third-party tools.
