How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs, like EUR/USD (0.0001). For pairs involving JPY, it is the second decimal place (0.01). For Singapore traders, knowing pip value in SGD is crucial because it directly impacts your risk management.
The Pip Value Formula
Pip Value (in quote currency) = (1 pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For example, trading USD/SGD at 1.3500 with a standard lot (100,000 units): 1 pip = 0.0001. Pip value in SGD = (0.0001 / 1.3500) × 100,000 = 7.41 SGD. If you trade a mini lot (10,000 units), it is 0.74 SGD.
Example with EUR/USD for Singapore Traders
Suppose you trade EUR/USD with a standard lot. If EUR/USD is 1.1000, pip value in USD = (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = 9.09 USD. To convert to SGD, multiply by the USD/SGD rate (e.g., 1.35). So, pip value = 9.09 × 1.35 = 12.27 SGD. This calculation helps you set stop-losses in SGD terms.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Most MAS-regulated brokers like IG, Saxo, or OANDA offer built-in pip calculators. You can also use online tools. Simply select the pair, lot size, and account currency (SGD) to get instant results. This saves time and reduces errors.
Why Pip Value Matters for Singapore Traders
With SGD as your base currency, pip value helps you calculate risk per trade. For example, if you risk 50 pips on a mini lot, your maximum loss is 50 × 0.74 SGD = 37 SGD. This aligns with MAS’s emphasis on responsible trading and risk management.
