How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest incremental move in a forex pair. For most major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.0001 for pairs with four decimal places, or 0.01 for pairs with two decimal places like USD/JPY. For Senegal traders using USD accounts, pip values are typically expressed in USD.
Basic Pip Value Formula
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (1 pip / Current Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. For example, if EUR/USD is trading at 1.2000 and you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units), the calculation is: (0.0001 / 1.2000) x 100,000 = $8.33. This means each pip movement is worth $8.33 in your account.
Pip Value for Different Lot Sizes
Senegal retail traders commonly use micro lots (1,000 units) with pip value of about $0.10, mini lots (10,000 units) with pip value of about $1.00, and standard lots (100,000 units) with pip value of about $10.00 for USD pairs. For pairs where USD is not the base currency, you may need to convert the pip value to USD using the current exchange rate.
Example for Senegal Traders
Suppose you are trading EUR/USD from Senegal with a mini lot (10,000 units) at an exchange rate of 1.1000. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 10,000 = $0.91 per pip. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, you earn $45.50. Using a pip calculator or broker platform can simplify this process.
