How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a forex pair, typically 0.0001 for most pairs (e.g., EUR/USD). For pairs involving the Japanese yen, a pip is 0.01. For Sao Tome and Principe traders trading USD-based pairs, understanding pips is crucial because they determine profit and loss in USD.
The Pip Value Formula
The basic formula for pip value is: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate. For a standard lot of 100,000 units, pip size is 0.0001. If EUR/USD is at 1.1000, pip value = (0.0001 × 100,000) / 1.1000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units), pip value = $0.909, and for a micro lot (1,000 units), pip value = $0.0909.
Example for Sao Tome and Principe Traders
Suppose you open a trade on USD/JPY at 110.00 with a mini lot. Pip size for JPY pairs is 0.01. Pip value = (0.01 × 10,000) / 110.00 = $0.909. If the trade moves 20 pips in your favor, you gain $18.18. If it moves against you, you lose the same amount. This calculation helps you set stop-losses at, say, 10 pips to limit loss to $9.09.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) have built-in pip value calculators. You can also use online calculators by entering the currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). For Sao Tome and Principe traders, always set the account currency to USD to get accurate pip values in your base currency.
