How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001) except for JPY pairs where it is the second decimal (0.01). For Saint Lucia traders using USD accounts, pip value is the monetary gain or loss per pip movement.
Formula for Pip Value
Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For standard lot (100,000 units) in EUR/USD: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09. For mini lot (10,000 units): $0.909. For micro lot (1,000 units): $0.0909.
Example for Saint Lucia Traders
Suppose you trade USD/CAD with a mini lot (10,000 units) and current rate is 1.2500. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) × 10,000 = $0.80 CAD. Since your account is in USD, convert: 0.80 / 1.2500 = $0.64 USD per pip. This means a 50-pip move equals $32 profit or loss.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip calculators. Enter your currency pair, trade size, and account currency (USD). For Saint Lucia traders, this tool saves time and reduces errors, especially when trading multiple pairs.
