How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001), except for JPY pairs where it is the second decimal place (0.01). For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that is one pip. In Qatar, traders typically trade major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, as well as crosses involving the Qatari Riyal (QAR) like USD/QAR.
Standard Formula for Pip Value
The basic formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) * Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) in EUR/USD: (0.0001 / 1.1000) * 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it is $0.909. For USD/JPY at 110.00: (0.01 / 110.00) * 100,000 = $9.09. When your account is in USD, and the quote currency is USD, the pip value is always $10 for a standard lot.
Calculating Pip Value for QAR Pairs
If you trade USD/QAR, the pip value is in QAR. For a standard lot: (0.0001 / 3.64) * 100,000 = 2.75 QAR per pip. To convert to USD, divide by the USD/QAR rate (e.g., 2.75 / 3.64 = $0.76 per pip). This is important for Qatar traders who may want to trade local currency pairs. Most brokers allow you to set your account base currency to USD, which simplifies calculations.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most forex brokers provide pip calculators on their platforms or websites. In Qatar, you can also use free online tools. Simply enter the currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). The calculator will give you the pip value instantly. This is especially useful when trading multiple pairs or using different lot sizes.
