How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price increment in most currency pairs, typically 0.0001 for pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY (where it is 0.01). For Norway traders trading USD-denominated accounts, understanding pip value is critical for precise risk management.
The Standard Formula
The general formula to calculate pip value in USD is: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate. Here, pip size is usually 0.0001, lot size is the number of units (e.g., 100,000 for a standard lot), and the exchange rate is the current price of the currency pair.
Example 1: EUR/USD
Suppose you trade EUR/USD at 1.1050 with a standard lot (100,000 units). Pip value = (0.0001 × 100,000) / 1.1050 = $9.05. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it is $0.905. For a micro lot (1,000 units), it is $0.0905.
Example 2: USD/JPY
For USD/JPY, pip size is 0.01. If USD/JPY = 110.50 and you trade a standard lot: Pip value = (0.01 × 100,000) / 110.50 = $9.05 (approximately). For a mini lot: $0.905.
Example 3: USD/NOK
For Norway traders, USD/NOK is a common pair. If USD/NOK = 10.50, pip size = 0.0001. For a standard lot: Pip value = (0.0001 × 100,000) / 10.50 = $0.95. For a mini lot: $0.095. Note that the pip value in USD is lower because of the higher exchange rate.
Using Trading Platforms
Platforms like MT4 and MT5 automatically display pip value in the account currency. For USD accounts, you can see it in the 'Trade' tab. Norway traders should verify with their broker's platform, as spreads and commissions may affect actual profit/loss.
