How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, a pip is 0.0001. For pairs involving the Japanese Yen, a pip is 0.01. Understanding pip movement helps Nepal traders calculate potential profit or loss.
Pip Value Formula for USD Accounts
Pip value = (pip size / exchange rate) × lot size. Since your account currency is USD, the result is in USD. For example, trading 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. If you trade a mini lot (10,000 units), the pip value is $0.909, and for a micro lot (1,000 units), it is $0.0909.
Example for Nepal Traders
Suppose you open a trade on GBP/USD at 1.2500 with a mini lot. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) × 10,000 = $0.80. If the price moves 50 pips in your favor, you earn $40. If it moves against you, you lose $40. This calculation helps Nepal traders set stop-loss and take-profit levels based on risk tolerance.
Using Pip Value Calculators
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) have built-in pip value calculators. Alternatively, use online calculators on broker websites. For Nepal traders, it is wise to manually calculate pip value for each trade to understand exposure, especially when using different lot sizes.
