How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair. For most pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, a pip is 0.0001 (except for JPY pairs where it is 0.01). For Mongolia traders trading USD-based pairs, understanding pips is crucial because your account currency is USD, making pip value directly comparable to your deposit.
The Pip Value Formula
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. For example, if you trade EUR/USD at 1.1000 with a standard lot (100,000 units): (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.91 per pip. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.09 per pip.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value in Mongolia
Mongolia traders often start with micro or mini lots due to lower capital requirements. If you deposit $500 via Bank Transfer, trading a micro lot (0.01 lot) means each pip is worth about $0.10. This allows you to risk only 2% of your account ($10) per trade, which equals a 100-pip stop loss. Using USDT deposits, the same calculation applies, but you must account for any conversion fees.
Practical Example for Mongolia Traders
Suppose you deposit $1,000 via Skrill and trade GBP/USD at 1.3000 with a mini lot (0.10 lot). Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.3000) x 10,000 = $0.77 per pip. If you set a stop loss of 50 pips, your risk is 50 x $0.77 = $38.50, which is 3.85% of your account. This calculation helps you adjust position size to meet your risk tolerance.
Using Online Pip Calculators
Most brokers provide free pip calculators. For Mongolia traders, ensure the calculator allows you to select account currency (USD) and lot size. Some brokers also offer mobile apps compatible with iOS/Android, making it easy to calculate pip values on the go. Always double-check the calculator's results with manual calculations to avoid errors.
