How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex Trading?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001) except for JPY pairs where it's the second decimal (0.01). For Malta traders trading in USD, understanding pip value helps you know how much you gain or lose per pip movement.
The Basic Pip Value Formula
Pip Value = (Pip Size / Exchange Rate) x Trade Size (in units). For USD-denominated accounts, the result is in USD. For example, if you trade EUR/USD at 1.1000 with a standard lot (100,000 units), pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = €9.09. Convert to USD: €9.09 x 1.1000 = $10.00.
Pip Value for Different Lot Sizes
Standard lot (100,000 units) = $10 per pip for EUR/USD at 1.1000. Mini lot (10,000 units) = $1 per pip. Micro lot (1,000 units) = $0.10 per pip. Malta traders often use mini or micro lots to manage risk, especially with limited capital from Skrill or Bank Transfer deposits.
Pip Value for USD Pairs
For pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/USD), pip value in USD is constant: $10 for standard lot, $1 for mini lot, $0.10 for micro lot. For pairs where USD is base (e.g., USD/JPY), pip value varies with exchange rate. For USD/JPY at 110.00, pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) x 100,000 = $9.09.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Most brokers offer built-in pip calculators. Malta traders should use these tools to avoid manual errors. When depositing via USDT, ensure your broker's calculator supports USD account currency. Always double-check calculations for cross pairs like EUR/GBP.
