How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs (0.0001), except for JPY pairs where it's the second decimal (0.01). For Madagascar traders using USD accounts, pip value is calculated in USD and then converted to Malagasy Ariary (MGA) if needed.
Pip Value Formula
Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For example, if EUR/USD is 1.1000 and you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units): Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot: $0.909. For a micro lot: $0.0909.
Pip Value for USD Pairs
When USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/USD), pip value is fixed at $10 per standard lot. When USD is the base currency (e.g., USD/JPY), pip value varies with the exchange rate. For USD/JPY at 110.00: Pip Value = (0.01 / 110.00) × 100,000 = $9.09.
Converting to Malagasy Ariary
To convert pip value to MGA, multiply the USD pip value by the current USD/MGA exchange rate. For example, if 1 pip = $10 and USD/MGA = 4,500, then pip value = 45,000 MGA. This helps Madagascar traders understand real profit/loss in local currency.
