How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest increment of price movement. For most currency pairs like EUR/USD, 1 pip = 0.0001. For JPY pairs, 1 pip = 0.01. In Lebanon, retail traders typically trade major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY.
Pip Value Formula
The basic formula: Pip Value = (1 pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a USD-denominated account, if you trade EUR/USD at 1.1000, a standard lot (100,000 units) gives: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units), pip value = $0.91; for a micro lot (1,000 units), pip value = $0.09.
Example for Lebanon Traders
Suppose you deposit $1,000 via Skrill or Bank Transfer into a Lebanon-based broker. You open a mini lot (10,000 units) on EUR/USD at 1.1000. Each pip move is worth $0.91. If the price moves 50 pips in your favor, you gain $45.50. If it moves against you, you lose the same. This helps you set stop-losses correctly.
Pip Value for Cross Pairs
For pairs not involving USD, like EUR/GBP, you must convert the pip value into USD. First calculate pip value in the quote currency (GBP), then convert to USD using the GBP/USD rate. Example: EUR/GBP at 0.8500, lot size 10,000. Pip value in GBP = (0.0001 / 0.8500) × 10,000 = £1.18. If GBP/USD = 1.3000, pip value in USD = £1.18 × 1.3000 = $1.53.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip calculators. Lebanon traders can also use CompareBroker.io's tool. Simply enter your account currency (USD), lot size, and pair. The tool does the math instantly. Manual calculation is still useful for understanding risk.
