How to Calculate Pip Value
Understanding Pips in Forex
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001). For pairs involving JPY, it’s the second decimal (0.01). For Laos traders using USD accounts, pip value directly affects your profit and loss. For example, if you trade 1 standard lot of EUR/USD and the price moves 10 pips, you gain or lose $100.
Pip Value Formula
The formula is: Pip Value (in USD) = (0.0001 / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a USD-denominated account, if you trade EUR/USD at 1.1000, pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09. For a micro lot (0.01 lot), it’s $0.09. For USD/JPY, pip = 0.01, so pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) × 100,000 = $9.09.
Examples for Laos Traders
Assume you trade GBP/USD with a mini lot (0.10 lot = 10,000 units) at an exchange rate of 1.3000. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.3000) × 10,000 = $0.77. If the price moves 20 pips, your profit is $15.40. In LAK terms at 11,000 LAK per USD, that’s about 169,400 LAK. Use a pip calculator tool to simplify.
Lot Size Guide
Standard lot = 100,000 units (pip value ~$10). Mini lot = 10,000 units (~$1). Micro lot = 1,000 units ($0.10). Nano lot = 100 units ($0.01). Start with micro lots to manage risk, especially with smaller deposits of $100-500 common among Laos retail traders.
Impact of Leverage
Leverage multiplies pip value impact. For example, with 1:100 leverage, a $100 deposit controls a $10,000 position (0.1 lot). A 10-pip move equals $10 profit or loss. Use leverage cautiously; high leverage can wipe out your account quickly.
