How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most pairs like EUR/USD, 1 pip = 0.0001. However, for USD/IDR, 1 pip = 0.01 because IDR is quoted with only two decimal places. For example, if USD/IDR moves from 15,000.00 to 15,000.01, that's a 1 pip movement.
Pip Value Formula
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (1 pip / exchange rate) × lot size. For USD/IDR, if the exchange rate is 15,000 and you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units): Pip Value = (0.01 / 15,000) × 100,000 = 0.0667 USD. To convert to IDR, multiply by the current exchange rate: 0.0667 × 15,000 = 1,000 IDR per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it's 100 IDR per pip.
Example for Indonesia Traders
Suppose you buy 1 mini lot of USD/IDR at 15,000 and the price moves to 15,010 (a 10 pip gain). Your profit = 10 pips × 100 IDR per pip = 1,000 IDR. If you trade 1 standard lot, the profit would be 10,000 IDR. Always use a pip calculator or MT4/MT5 built-in tool to verify your calculations before entering a trade.
Why Pip Value Matters for Risk Management
Knowing pip value in IDR helps you set appropriate stop-loss distances. For example, if you're willing to risk 50,000 IDR per trade and each pip is worth 1,000 IDR, you can set a stop-loss of 50 pips. This is crucial for Indonesia traders who want to protect their capital while trading with local payment methods like GoPay or OVO.
