How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex?
A pip is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs (0.0001), except for JPY pairs where it's the second decimal (0.01). For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that's a 1-pip move. In USD/JPY, a move from 110.00 to 110.01 is also 1 pip. Iceland traders trading USD-based pairs need to understand that pip values vary by lot size and pair.
The Standard Pip Value Formula
The formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) * Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) in EUR/USD at 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) * 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.909. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.0909. For USD/JPY at 110.00: (0.01 / 110.00) * 100,000 = $9.09 (since USD is base).
Example Calculation for Iceland Traders
Suppose you trade EUR/USD with a mini lot (10,000 units) and the exchange rate is 1.1000. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) * 10,000 = $0.909. If you risk 20 pips, your potential loss is $0.909 * 20 = $18.18. This helps you set stop-loss levels that align with your risk tolerance. Remember, if your account is in USD and the quote currency is not USD, you must convert the pip value to USD.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4/5 include built-in pip calculators. Alternatively, use online calculators that allow you to input your account currency (USD), lot size, and pair. For Iceland traders, always ensure the calculator uses the current exchange rate for accuracy. Many brokers also provide mobile apps with this feature.
