How to Calculate Pip Value
Step 1: Understand the Pip Definition
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (e.g., 0.0001). For pairs involving the Japanese yen (JPY), a pip is the second decimal (0.01). In Hungary, retail traders commonly trade EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY. For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that is a 1 pip move.
Step 2: Know Your Lot Size
Standard lot = 100,000 units; Mini lot = 10,000 units; Micro lot = 1,000 units. Hungary traders often start with micro or mini lots to limit risk, especially when depositing via Bank Transfer or Skrill with smaller amounts.
Step 3: Apply the Pip Value Formula
Pip value (in USD) = (0.0001 / exchange rate) × lot size. Example: Trade 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units) at the same rate, pip value = $0.909. For micro lot (1,000 units), pip value = $0.0909.
Step 4: Adjust for USD/HUF Pairs
When trading USD/HUF, the pip value is calculated differently because HUF is not the base currency. For USD/HUF at 350.00, a 1 pip move = 0.01 HUF. To convert to USD: (0.01 / 350.00) × lot size. For 1 standard lot, pip value in USD = (0.01 / 350.00) × 100,000 = $2.86. Hungary traders should always check the quote currency to avoid errors.
Step 5: Use Online Pip Calculators
Many brokers regulated by the local financial authority offer free pip calculators on their platforms. These tools automate the calculation, saving time. However, understanding the manual method is crucial for independent verification, especially when depositing via USDT or Skrill for faster trading.
