How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip and Why Does It Matter?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price movement in a currency pair. For most pairs, a pip equals 0.0001, except for Japanese yen pairs where it is 0.01. Pip value tells you how much each pip movement is worth in your account currency. For Hong Kong traders using USD accounts, pip value is calculated in USD, but you may also convert to HKD for local reference.
The Standard Pip Value Formula
The formula is: Pip Value (in quote currency) = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For example, if you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.1000, the pip value is (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = 9.09 USD. For USD/HKD, a pip is 0.0001, so pip value = (0.0001 / 7.82) × 100,000 = 1.28 USD (or 10 HKD).
Calculating Pip Value for Different Lot Sizes
Hong Kong traders often use standard (100,000 units), mini (10,000), or micro (1,000) lots. For a mini lot of USD/HKD, the pip value is 0.128 USD (1 HKD). For a micro lot, it is 0.0128 USD (0.1 HKD). Always calculate pip value before entering a trade to set appropriate stop-loss levels and manage risk.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip value calculators. Simply enter your account currency (USD), the currency pair, and lot size. For Hong Kong traders, these tools often include USD/HKD and other Asian pairs. However, manual calculation ensures you understand the mechanics. Practice with pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY to build confidence.
