How to Calculate Pip Value
Understanding Pip Basics for Gambia Traders
In forex trading, a pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.0001 (except for JPY pairs where it is 0.01). For Gambia traders, knowing the pip value is essential for risk management. For example, if you trade 1 standard lot of EUR/USD and the price moves 10 pips in your favor, you gain $100 (10 pips × $10 per pip).
Formula for Pip Value
The universal formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a USD account trading EUR/USD at 1.1000, one pip is 0.0001. So: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. However, most brokers simplify this. For pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD), the pip value is fixed: $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot, and $0.10 per micro lot.
Example for Gambia Traders
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill into your USD account. You decide to trade 0.1 lots (10,000 units) of GBP/USD. The pip value is $1 per pip. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, you earn $50. If it moves against you by 30 pips, you lose $30. Always calculate the pip value before entering a trade to set appropriate stop-loss levels. For cross pairs like GBP/JPY, the pip value varies based on the exchange rate, so use your broker's calculator.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Most brokers offer built-in pip value calculators on their platforms (MT4, MT5, or TradingView). For Gambia traders, it is safer to use these tools than manual calculations, especially when trading exotic pairs involving the Gambian Dalasi (GMD). Remember that spreads and commissions affect your net profit. For example, if the spread on EUR/USD is 2 pips, you start the trade $20 down on a standard lot.
