How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, one pip equals 0.0001. For pairs involving JPY, one pip equals 0.01. For Fiji traders with USD accounts, pip value is calculated in USD to determine profit or loss per trade.
Basic Formula for Pip Value
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (Pip Size / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD at 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09. For USD/JPY at 110.00: (0.01 / 110.00) x 100,000 = $9.09. When USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD), pip value is fixed at $10 per standard lot.
Example for Fiji Trader
Suppose you trade EUR/USD with a mini lot (10,000 units) and EUR/USD rate is 1.1200. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1200) x 10,000 = $0.89. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, profit = 50 x $0.89 = $44.50. For USD/JPY at 110.00, pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) x 10,000 = $0.91.
Using a Pip Calculator
Many brokers offer free pip calculators. Enter your account currency (USD), lot size, and pair. For Fiji traders, ensure your broker's platform (MT4/MT5) displays pip value automatically. Always double-check with manual calculation for accuracy.
