How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price movement in a currency pair. For most major pairs, a pip is 0.0001. For pairs involving the Japanese Yen, a pip is 0.01. Understanding pips is crucial because all profit and loss calculations are based on pip movements.
Pip Value Formula for USD Accounts
Since Eritrea traders use USD as their account currency, the formula is: Pip Value = (0.0001 / Exchange Rate) x Trade Size (in units). For example, if you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.1000, pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09. For USD pairs like USD/JPY, pip value is fixed at $10 per standard lot because the quote currency is USD.
Example for Eritrea Traders
Suppose you open a 0.1 lot (10,000 units) trade on GBP/USD at 1.2500. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) x 10,000 = $0.80. If the price moves 50 pips in your favor, you gain $40. This calculation helps you set stop-losses based on your risk tolerance, which is especially important in Eritrea where market volatility can be higher due to economic factors.
Using Broker Platforms
Most brokers display pip value automatically in their trading platforms (MT4, MT5, or cTrader). However, it's good practice to verify manually, especially when trading exotic pairs or using different lot sizes. For Eritrea traders using Skrill or USDT for deposits, ensure your broker supports these methods and that your account currency is set to USD to avoid conversion fees.
