How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair, typically 0.0001 for most major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY (except for JPY pairs where it's 0.01). For Egypt traders, understanding pip value means converting that movement into Egyptian Pounds (EGP) because your account currency may be EGP or you need to know your profit/loss in local terms.
Basic Formula for Pip Value
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (Pip Size) × (Trade Size in units) × (Exchange Rate of the Counter Currency to EGP). For example, if you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD, and the pip size is 0.0001, then pip value in USD is 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10. To convert to EGP, multiply by the USD/EGP exchange rate. If USD/EGP is 30.00, then pip value = $10 × 30 = 300 EGP.
Example for Egypt Traders
Suppose you trade 0.5 lot (50,000 units) of GBP/USD. Pip size = 0.0001. Pip value in USD = 0.0001 × 50,000 = $5. If USD/EGP is 30.50, then pip value = $5 × 30.50 = 152.50 EGP. This means every pip movement in GBP/USD will change your profit or loss by 152.50 EGP. Knowing this helps you set stop-losses and take-profit levels in EGP terms.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) have built-in pip calculators. You can enter your trade size, currency pair, and account currency (EGP) to get instant pip value. For Egypt traders, always check the USD/EGP rate before trading because it changes daily. Some brokers also offer EGP-denominated accounts, which simplify calculations.
