How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price increment in forex trading, usually 0.0001 for most currency pairs (except JPY pairs where it's 0.01). For Dominica traders, understanding pip movements helps quantify profit or loss per trade.
Pip Value Formula
The basic formula is: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Position Size) / Exchange Rate. For USD-denominated accounts, if trading pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD), the pip value is fixed: $10 per standard lot (100,000 units), $1 per mini lot (10,000 units), and $0.10 per micro lot (1,000 units). For pairs where USD is the base currency (e.g., USD/JPY), you must divide by the current exchange rate.
Example for Dominica Traders
Suppose you trade USD/JPY with a mini lot (10,000 units) at an exchange rate of 150.00. The pip value = (0.01 × 10,000) / 150.00 = 1.00 / 150.00 = 0.0067 USD per pip. If the pair moves 50 pips, your profit or loss is 50 × $0.0067 = $0.33. For EUR/USD, a mini lot gives $1 per pip (since USD is quote currency), so a 50-pip move equals $50.
Using Online Calculators
Many brokers offer free pip calculators that automatically compute values based on your pair, lot size, and account currency. Dominica traders should use these tools to double-check manual calculations, especially when trading exotic pairs or using fractional lots.
