How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex Trading?
A pip is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs, except for JPY pairs where it is the second decimal. For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1050 to 1.1051, that is a one-pip movement. Understanding pip value helps Danish traders calculate potential profit or loss per trade.
Pip Value Formula for USD-Denominated Accounts
The formula is: Pip Value = (1 pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.1050: Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.1050) × 100,000 = $9.05. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.90. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.09. This calculation is direct for Danish traders using USD accounts.
Example for Danish Trader
Suppose you trade 0.5 lots (50,000 units) of GBP/USD at an exchange rate of 1.2500. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) × 50,000 = $4.00. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, your profit is 50 × $4.00 = $200. Always use the current rate before entering a trade.
Pip Value for JPY Pairs
For USD/JPY, the pip is 0.01. If USD/JPY is 150.00, pip value for a standard lot = (0.01 / 150.00) × 100,000 = ¥6.67. Since your account is in USD, convert to USD: ¥6.67 / 150.00 = $0.044 per pip. This is much smaller than EUR/USD.
Using Trading Platforms
Most brokers in Denmark provide pip value calculators in MT4, MT5, or TradingView. You can also use online calculators. Always verify the pip value before trading, especially when using different lot sizes.
