How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001) except for JPY pairs where it's the second decimal (0.01). For Croatia traders using USD accounts, the pip value depends on the currency pair, lot size, and exchange rate.
Pip Value Formula
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. For EUR/USD at 1.1000, one pip = 0.0001. For a standard lot (100,000 units): (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.91. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.09.
Example for Croatia Trader
Suppose you deposit $2,000 via Skrill and trade EUR/USD with a mini lot. Your pip value is $0.91. If you set a 50-pip stop-loss, your risk is $45.50 (50 x $0.91). This helps you stay within your 2% risk rule ($40 per trade). Adjust lot size accordingly.
JPY Pairs Example
For USD/JPY at 110.00, one pip = 0.01. Pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) x 100,000 = $9.09 per standard lot. Croatia traders should note that JPY pairs have different pip values due to the exchange rate.
Using Trading Platforms
Most platforms like MetaTrader 4 or 5 automatically calculate pip value. However, understanding the manual calculation helps you verify and make informed decisions. Use built-in calculators or third-party tools for accuracy.
