How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex Trading?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most currency pairs (0.0001), except for pairs involving the Japanese Yen where it is the second decimal place (0.01). For Chile traders, the most relevant pairs are EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CLP. Understanding pip value helps you determine the monetary risk per trade.
Basic Pip Value Formula
The standard formula for pip value in USD is: Pip Value = (Pip in decimal places × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate. For example, for EUR/USD at 1.1000, one pip for a standard lot (100,000 units) is: (0.0001 × 100,000) / 1.1000 = $9.09 USD. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it is $0.909 USD.
Calculating Pip Value for USD/CLP
When trading USD/CLP, the pip is 0.01 (since CLP is quoted to two decimal places). For one standard lot at USD/CLP = 800: Pip Value = (0.01 × 100,000) / 800 = 1.25 CLP. To convert to USD: 1.25 / 800 = $0.00156 USD per pip. This means a 100-pip move equals about $0.156 USD per standard lot.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
To avoid manual errors, Chile traders can use online pip value calculators from brokers like XM, IG, or local platforms. Enter your account currency (USD), lot size, and pair to get instant results. Always verify the calculator uses CLP quotes correctly.
