How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001) for most currency pairs like EUR/USD, and the second decimal place (0.01) for JPY pairs. For USD pairs, one pip on a standard lot (100,000 units) equals $10. For a mini lot (10,000 units), one pip = $1. For a micro lot (1,000 units), one pip = $0.10.
Formula for Pip Value
Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size in units. For USD pairs where USD is the quote currency, use: Pip Value = 0.0001 × Lot Size. For example, trading 0.1 lot (10,000 units) of EUR/USD: Pip Value = 0.0001 × 10,000 = $1. For USD/JPY (where JPY is quote), divide by the exchange rate: Pip Value = (0.01 / 110) × 10,000 = $0.91 (approx).
Example for Chad Traders
Suppose you trade 0.05 lot (5,000 units) of GBP/USD. Pip Value = 0.0001 × 5,000 = $0.50 per pip. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, you gain $25. To convert to XAF, multiply by the USD/XAF rate (e.g., 600 XAF per USD): 50 pips × $0.50 × 600 = 15,000 XAF. Always calculate in USD first, then convert.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip calculators on their platforms. Enter your currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). The calculator does the math instantly. For Chad traders, this is useful to avoid manual errors, especially when converting to XAF.
