How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in most currency pairs, typically 0.0001 for pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF. For pairs involving the Japanese Yen (e.g., USD/JPY), a pip is 0.01. Understanding pip value is essential for calculating profit, loss, and risk.
The Basic Formula
The formula for pip value in a USD-denominated account is: Pip Value = (Pip in decimal) × (Trade Size). For standard lots (100,000 units), 1 pip = 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10. For mini lots (10,000), it's $1. For micro lots (1,000), it's $0.10.
Example for Bulgaria Traders
Suppose you are a Bulgaria trader with a USD account. You buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1200. The market moves to 1.1210, a 10-pip gain. Your profit = 10 pips × $10 = $100. If you trade a mini lot, profit = 10 pips × $1 = $10.
Adjusting for Different Currency Pairs
For pairs where USD is the base currency (e.g., USD/JPY), the pip value calculation changes. For USD/JPY, pip value = (0.01 / current rate) × trade size. For example, if USD/JPY is 110.00 and you trade 1 standard lot, pip value = (0.01 / 110.00) × 100,000 = $9.09. Always use the current exchange rate.
Using a Pip Calculator
Many brokers offer free pip calculators. You can also use online tools. Simply enter your account currency (USD), trade size, and currency pair to get instant pip value. This saves time and reduces errors.
