How to Calculate Pip Value
Understanding Pips and Pip Value
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price move in forex, typically 0.0001 for most pairs. For USD/JPY, it is 0.01. Pip value tells you how much each pip movement is worth in your account currency. For Andorra traders using USD accounts, this is straightforward for pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/USD).
Formula for Pip Value
The universal formula is: Pip Value = (Pip in decimal places / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at an exchange rate of 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) × 100,000 = $9.09. However, if your account is in USD and USD is the quote currency, the pip value is always $10 per standard lot because the exchange rate cancels out.
Example for Andorra Traders
Suppose you trade 0.5 lots (50,000 units) of GBP/USD at 1.2500. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.2500) × 50,000 = $4.00. If the price moves 20 pips in your favor, you make $80. For USD/JPY, where pip is 0.01, use the same formula. At 110.00 for 1 standard lot: (0.01 / 110.00) × 100,000 = $9.09.
Using Trading Platforms
Most platforms like MT4 or TradingView automatically calculate pip value. But understanding the math helps you manage risk. In Andorra, many brokers offer demo accounts so you can practice before depositing real money via Bank Transfer or Skrill.
