How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price increment in forex trading. For most currency pairs, a pip is 0.0001 of the exchange rate. For JPY pairs, it is 0.01. Understanding pips is essential for calculating profit, loss, and risk. For Afghanistan traders using USD accounts, pip value is calculated in USD.
Pip Value Formula
The formula is: Pip Value = (Pip size / Exchange rate) x Lot size. Lot sizes are: standard (100,000 units), mini (10,000), and micro (1,000). For example, trading 1 mini lot of GBP/USD at 1.3000: (0.0001 / 1.3000) x 10,000 = $0.77 per pip.
Example for Afghanistan Traders
Suppose you trade EUR/USD with a standard lot (100,000 units) at an exchange rate of 1.1000. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09. If the price moves 10 pips in your favor, you gain $90.90. If it moves against you, you lose the same amount. This calculation helps you set stop-loss orders and manage risk.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers provide a pip calculator. Enter your account currency (USD), lot size, and currency pair. The calculator does the math. However, knowing the formula helps you verify results. For Afghanistan traders, using a pip calculator is recommended to avoid errors, especially when trading multiple pairs.
