How to Calculate Margin in Forex
Understanding Margin Basics
Margin is not a fee or cost — it is a security deposit held by your broker. For Uzbekistan traders, margin requirements vary by broker and instrument. Standard margin for major pairs like EUR/USD or GBP/USD is usually lower than for exotics. Always check the margin policy of your broker before trading.
Margin Calculation Formula
The formula is: Required Margin = (Lot Size × Contract Size × Current Price) / Leverage. For example, if you trade 0.1 lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 with 1:50 leverage, margin = (0.1 × 100,000 × 1.10) / 50 = $220. Uzbekistan traders can use MT4/MT5 built-in calculators or online tools to avoid manual errors.
Leverage and Margin Relationship
Higher leverage reduces margin requirements but increases risk. In Uzbekistan, many brokers offer leverage up to 1:500. For instance, a $1,000 margin with 1:100 leverage controls $100,000. However, high leverage can lead to rapid losses. The local financial authority advises responsible leverage use.
Margin Level and Margin Call
Margin level = (Equity / Used Margin) × 100%. If equity falls near used margin, you get a margin call. For Uzbekistan traders, stop-out levels are often 50% or 20%. Example: if you have $2,000 equity and $1,000 used margin, margin level = 200%. If equity drops to $1,100, margin level = 110%, triggering a warning.
Practical Example for Uzbekistan Traders
Suppose you deposit $5,000 via Bank Transfer or USDT. You choose 1:100 leverage and open 0.5 lot EUR/USD at 1.1000. Margin = (0.5 × 100,000 × 1.10) / 100 = $550. Free margin = $4,450. If the trade moves against you by 200 pips, loss = $1,000, equity = $4,000, margin level = 727%. Always calculate margin before entering a trade.
