How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
Understanding Lot Sizes in Forex
A lot is a standard unit of currency in forex trading. There are four common lot sizes: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), micro lot (1,000 units), and nano lot (100 units). For Vanuatu retail traders, micro lots (0.01) are most practical as they allow precise risk control with smaller account balances.
The Lot Size Formula
The core formula is: Lot Size = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value). Suppose you have a $2,000 account funded via Skrill, you want to risk 2% ($40), your stop loss is 30 pips, and pip value for a micro lot is $0.10. Then: Lot Size = ($2,000 × 0.02) ÷ (30 × $0.10) = $40 ÷ $3 = 13.33 micro lots, which rounds to 0.13 lots.
Pip Value Calculation
Pip value depends on your account currency and pair. For USD accounts, pip value for EUR/USD is $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot, and $0.10 per micro lot. For USD/JPY, pip value is slightly different. Vanuatu traders should use a pip calculator provided by their broker to avoid errors.
Risk Management First
Always risk no more than 1–2% of your account per trade. For a $500 account, that’s $5–$10 maximum loss per trade. If your stop loss is 20 pips, and pip value is $0.10, your lot size should be 0.05 (mini lot) or 0.01 (micro lot). This conservative approach protects your capital, especially when using USDT deposits which can be volatile.
