How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is Lot Size in Forex?
Lot size refers to the volume of a trade. Standard lot = 100,000 units, mini lot = 10,000 units, micro lot = 1,000 units. For USD/TRY, 1 pip is typically 0.0001. A standard lot on USD/TRY moves $10 per pip, while a micro lot moves $0.10 per pip.
Why Lot Size Matters for Turkey Traders
Turkey traders face unique challenges: high TRY inflation makes USD/TRY volatile, with daily ranges of 100+ pips. Using a large lot size can wipe out your account quickly. For example, if you trade a standard lot and USD/TRY moves 200 pips against you, you lose $2,000. With a micro lot, the loss is only $20.
Step-by-Step Lot Size Calculation
Step 1: Determine your risk per trade. Never risk more than 1-2% of your account. If your account is $1,000, max risk = $20 per trade.
Step 2: Calculate pip value for your pair. For USD/TRY, pip value = (0.0001 / current exchange rate) × lot size. Example: If USD/TRY = 30.00, pip value for 1 mini lot (10,000 units) = (0.0001 / 30.00) × 10,000 = $0.0333 per pip.
Step 3: Set your stop-loss in pips. If your stop-loss is 50 pips, risk = 50 pips × pip value.
Step 4: Calculate lot size. Lot size = (risk amount) / (stop-loss pips × pip value per unit). Example: Risk $20, stop-loss 50 pips, pip value $0.0333 per mini lot → Lot size = 20 / (50 × 0.0333) ≈ 12 mini lots (0.12 standard lots).
Example for Turkey Traders
Account: $500 (funded via Papara). Pair: USD/TRY. Risk: 2% = $10. Stop-loss: 40 pips. Pip value for micro lot (0.01): $0.01. Lot size = 10 / (40 × 0.01) = 25 micro lots = 0.25 standard lots. But with SPK leverage of 1:10, margin required = (100,000 × 30.00) / 10 = 300,000 TRY ≈ $10,000 — too high. So use a mini account with lower leverage.
