How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade size. In forex, standard lots are 100,000 units of base currency, mini lots are 10,000 units, and micro lots are 1,000 units. For example, trading 1 standard lot of EUR/USD means buying or selling €100,000.
Why Lot Size Matters for Spanish Traders
In Spain, the CNMV (Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores) enforces strict leverage limits (1:30 for major pairs) to protect retail traders. This means your margin requirements are higher, so calculating lot size correctly prevents margin calls. Additionally, Spanish traders often use accounts in USD, so you must convert your capital from EUR to USD when calculating.
The Lot Size Formula
The basic formula is: Lot Size = (Risk Amount) ÷ (Stop Loss in pips × Pip Value). For a Spanish trader with a €5,000 account (approx $5,400 USD), risking 2% (€100), with a 20-pip stop loss and €10 pip value per standard lot: (100) ÷ (20 × 10) = 0.5 mini lots (0.05 standard lots).
Step-by-Step Calculation Example
1. Determine your account balance in USD. If your account is funded via Bank Transfer or Skrill in EUR, convert to USD at current rate. 2. Decide risk percentage (e.g., 2%). 3. Calculate risk amount: €5,000 × 0.02 = €100. 4. Set stop loss in pips (e.g., 20). 5. Find pip value for your pair (e.g., EUR/USD pip value = $10 per standard lot). 6. Apply formula: €100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.5 mini lots. Always double-check with a lot size calculator.
