How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot represents the number of currency units you trade. Standard lot = 100,000 units, mini lot = 10,000, micro lot = 1,000, and nano lot = 100. For Sao Tome and Principe traders with USD accounts, pip values are fixed: $10 per pip for standard lot, $1 for mini, $0.10 for micro, and $0.01 for nano.
Step 1: Determine Your Risk Per Trade
Most professional traders risk 1-2% of their account per trade. For example, if you have a $1,000 account and risk 1%, your maximum loss per trade is $10. This is your risk amount.
Step 2: Set Your Stop Loss in Pips
Decide the number of pips you are willing to lose. For instance, if you set a 20-pip stop loss on EUR/USD, your risk in pips is 20.
Step 3: Calculate Lot Size Using the Formula
Lot size = (Risk amount) / (Stop loss in pips × Pip value per lot). Using the example: Lot size = $10 / (20 × $10) = 0.05 standard lots, which is a mini lot. For a $500 account risking 2% ($10) with a 30-pip stop loss: Lot size = $10 / (30 × $10) = 0.033 lots, so trade 0.03 lots (micro lot).
Step 4: Adjust for Account Currency
Since your account is in USD, pip values for USD pairs are straightforward. For cross pairs, use a pip value calculator. Always double-check with your broker’s trading platform.
