How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
Understanding Lot Sizes in Forex
In forex, a lot is a standardized unit of trade. There are four main lot sizes: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), micro lot (1,000 units), and nano lot (100 units). For Mexico traders with small accounts (e.g., $500), micro lots are ideal because they limit risk per trade. For larger accounts (e.g., $10,000), mini lots or standard lots may be suitable.
Step-by-Step Lot Size Calculation
To calculate lot size, follow these steps:
Step 1: Determine your risk per trade. Most Mexico traders risk 1-2% of their account. For a $2,000 account, 1% risk = $20.
Step 2: Set your stop loss in pips. For example, a 30-pip stop loss on EUR/USD.
Step 3: Find the pip value for your lot size. For a standard lot, pip value is $10; for a mini lot, $1; for a micro lot, $0.10.
Step 4: Use the formula: Lot size = Risk amount / (Stop loss pips × Pip value). For $20 risk, 30-pip stop loss, and mini lot pip value of $1, lot size = 20 / (30 × 1) = 0.66 mini lots (or 6.6 micro lots).
Mexico-Specific Example
Suppose you have a USD account with $1,000, risk 1% ($10), and a 20-pip stop loss on USD/MXN. Pip value for a mini lot is $1. Lot size = $10 / (20 × $1) = 0.5 mini lots (5 micro lots). This ensures you lose only $10 if stopped out.
