How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
Understanding Lot Sizes in Forex
A lot is the standard unit of trade size. There are three main types: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), and micro lot (1,000 units). For Lesotho traders using USD accounts, the pip value for a standard lot is approximately $10 for most major pairs. This means a 10-pip move equals $100 profit or loss.
The Lot Size Formula
The formula is: Lot Size = (Account Risk %) × Account Balance / (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value per Lot). For example, if you have a $1,000 account, risk 2% ($20), set stop loss at 20 pips, and pip value is $10 per standard lot: Lot Size = (20) / (20 × 10) = 0.1 standard lot (or 1 mini lot).
Example for a Lesotho Trader
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill into your forex account. You decide to risk 1% ($5) per trade. Your stop loss is 30 pips. For EUR/USD, pip value per standard lot is $10. Lot size = $5 / (30 × $10) = 0.0167 standard lots (1.67 micro lots). You would trade 0.02 lots (2 micro lots) to stay within risk.
Using Lot Size Calculators
Most brokers offer free lot size calculators. Input your account balance (in USD), risk percentage, stop loss in pips, and currency pair. The calculator instantly shows the recommended lot size. This tool is invaluable for Basotho traders to avoid over-leveraging, especially when using USDT deposits which can be volatile.
