How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What Is Lot Size in Forex?
A lot is a standard unit of currency in forex trading. One standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For retail traders in Laos, micro lots (0.01 = 1,000 units) and mini lots (0.10 = 10,000 units) are more common because account sizes are smaller.
The Lot Size Formula
The formula is: Lot Size = (Account Risk in USD) ÷ (Stop-Loss in Pips × Pip Value per Standard Lot). For a USD-denominated account, one pip for a standard lot is usually $10, for a mini lot $1, and for a micro lot $0.10.
Example for a Laos Trader
Suppose you deposit 500 USD via Skrill. You decide to risk 2% per trade = 10 USD. Your stop-loss is 30 pips. For a standard lot, pip value is $10. So, lot size = 10 ÷ (30 × 10) = 0.033 standard lots, which you round down to 0.03 (3 micro lots). If you fund via USDT, the calculation is identical because USDT is pegged to USD.
Using a Lot Size Calculator
Most trading platforms like MT4 and TradingView have built-in calculators. You can also use online tools. Enter your account currency (USD), risk percentage, stop-loss in pips, and the pair (e.g., EUR/USD). The calculator gives you the exact lot size.
Why Lot Size Matters for Laos Traders
With limited capital, a wrong lot size can wipe out your account quickly. Many Laos traders overleverage using USDT deposits because they think small balances can trade big lots. Always use the formula to keep risk under 2% per trade.
