How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is the standard unit of measurement for a forex trade. There are four main types: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), micro lot (1,000 units), and nano lot (100 units). For India traders, due to lower capital and SEBI's leverage restrictions, mini and micro lots are most common.
Why Lot Size Matters for India Traders
Indian traders often start with small capital (₹10,000 to ₹50,000). Using a standard lot would mean risking too much per trade. For example, a 10-pip move on a standard lot of USD/INR is worth ₹1,000 (since 1 pip = ₹0.10 for 100,000 units). That's a huge risk for a small account. Correct lot size ensures you never risk more than 1-3% of your account on a single trade.
The Lot Size Formula
The basic formula is: Lot Size = (Account Balance × Risk Percentage) ÷ (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value per Lot). Let's break it down for India traders:
- Account Balance: Your total capital in INR (e.g., ₹30,000)
- Risk Percentage: Typically 1-3% (e.g., 2% = ₹600)
- Stop Loss in Pips: The number of pips you are willing to lose (e.g., 20 pips)
- Pip Value per Lot: For USD/INR, 1 pip = ₹0.10 for a standard lot, ₹0.01 for a mini lot, ₹0.001 for a micro lot
Example Calculation for an India Trader
Suppose you have ₹30,000 in your account, risk 2% (₹600), set a stop loss of 20 pips, and trade a mini lot of USD/INR (pip value = ₹0.10). Lot Size = 600 ÷ (20 × 0.10) = 600 ÷ 2 = 300 mini lots? That's too high! Actually, the formula gives the number of mini lots: 600 / (20 * 0.10) = 600 / 2 = 300 mini lots, which exceeds your capital. So you must use a micro lot (pip value = ₹0.01). Then: Lot Size = 600 ÷ (20 × 0.01) = 600 ÷ 0.20 = 3,000 micro lots? That's still high. Let's correct: For a micro lot, pip value is ₹0.001 for USD/INR? Wait, for USD/INR, 1 pip = 0.0001 USD/INR, so for 1,000 units, pip value = 0.0001 × 1,000 = 0.1 USD = about ₹8.3 INR. So it's easier to use a lot size calculator. But the key point: always start with micro lots for small accounts.
