How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade. Standard lot = 100,000 units, mini lot = 10,000 units, micro lot = 1,000 units, and nano lot = 100 units. For Guinea-Bissau traders with USD accounts, micro lots are often ideal for small balances.
Why Lot Size Matters
Using correct lot size prevents over-leveraging. With local financial authority regulations capping leverage at 1:30, a wrong lot size can trigger margin calls. For example, a $500 account trading 1 standard lot would face huge risk.
Formula for Lot Size Calculation
Lot Size = (Account Balance × Risk Percentage) / (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value). For a $1,000 account risking 1% with a 20-pip stop loss and pip value of $0.10 for mini lots: Lot Size = (1000 × 0.01) / (20 × 0.10) = 10 / 2 = 5 mini lots (0.05 standard lots).
Practical Example for Guinea-Bissau
You deposit $300 via Skrill. You want to risk 2% per trade with a 15-pip stop loss. Pip value for mini lot on EUR/USD is $1. Lot Size = (300 × 0.02) / (15 × 1) = 6 / 15 = 0.4 mini lots (0.04 standard lots). Use a position size calculator to avoid errors.
