How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is Lot Size in Forex?
In forex, lot size refers to the volume of a trade. Standard lot = 100,000 units, mini lot = 10,000 units, micro lot = 1,000 units, and nano lot = 100 units. For Guinea traders, micro lots are ideal for small accounts. The lot size you choose directly impacts pip value and risk.
Step 1: Determine Your Risk Per Trade
Never risk more than 1-2% of your account balance per trade. For example, if you have a $1,000 USD account, your maximum risk per trade is $10 to $20. This ensures you can survive losing streaks.
Step 2: Calculate Pip Value
Pip value depends on lot size and currency pair. For USD pairs, 1 standard lot = $10 per pip, 1 mini lot = $1 per pip, 1 micro lot = $0.10 per pip. For example, trading EUR/USD with a micro lot gives $0.10 per pip movement.
Step 3: Use the Lot Size Formula
Lot size = (Account risk) / (Stop loss in pips × Pip value). Example: $1,000 account, risk 2% ($20), stop loss 50 pips, pip value $0.10 (micro lot). Lot size = $20 / (50 × $0.10) = $20 / $5 = 4 micro lots (0.04 lot).
Step 4: Adjust for Leverage
Leverage amplifies both profits and losses. In Guinea, brokers offer leverage up to 1:500. High leverage allows larger lot sizes but increases risk. Always calculate lot size based on your actual risk tolerance, not maximum leverage.
