How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What Is Lot Size in Forex?
A lot size is the number of currency units you trade. In forex, standard lots are 100,000 units, mini lots are 10,000 units, and micro lots are 1,000 units. For El Salvador traders, all calculations are in USD because your account is funded in dollars. This simplifies the math—no currency conversion needed. The Lot Size Formula
Lot size = (Account balance × Risk percentage) / (Stop loss in pips × Pip value per lot). For example, if you have a $1,000 account, risk 2% ($20), set a 30-pip stop loss on EUR/USD, and know that 1 pip on a mini lot = $1, then your lot size = $20 / (30 × $1) = 0.67 mini lots. You can round this to 0.07 standard lots or 0.7 mini lots depending on your broker's increments.
Pip Value for USD Pairs
For pairs where USD is the quote currency (like EUR/USD, GBP/USD), pip value is fixed: 1 standard lot = $10 per pip, 1 mini lot = $1 per pip, 1 micro lot = $0.10 per pip. For pairs where USD is the base currency (like USD/JPY), pip value varies with exchange rate. Use a pip value calculator from your broker to get exact numbers.
Example for El Salvador Traders
Suppose you have a $500 account and want to trade EUR/USD with a 20-pip stop loss, risking 1% ($5). Pip value for a mini lot = $1. Lot size = $5 / (20 × $1) = 0.25 mini lots = 2.5 micro lots. Most brokers allow 0.01 lot increments, so you can trade 0.25 mini lots. This ensures you never lose more than $5 on the trade.
