How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is Lot Size in Forex?
A lot size represents the volume of a trade in forex. Standard lots (100,000 units), mini lots (10,000 units), micro lots (1,000 units), and nano lots (100 units) are common. For Brunei traders with smaller accounts, micro and mini lots are ideal. Lot size directly affects your pip value and risk. For a USD-denominated account, one pip on a standard lot equals $10, on a mini lot $1, and on a micro lot $0.10.
How to Calculate Lot Size Formula
The formula is: Lot Size = (Account Risk) / (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value). Account Risk is the amount you are willing to lose per trade, usually 1-2% of your balance. For example, if you have a $1,000 account and risk 1%, your risk is $10. If your stop loss is 20 pips, and pip value for a mini lot is $1, then lot size = $10 / (20 × $1) = 0.5 mini lots or 0.05 standard lots.
Example for Brunei Traders
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill into your broker account. You set risk at 1% ($5). You trade EUR/USD with a 30-pip stop loss. Pip value for a micro lot is $0.10. Lot size = $5 / (30 × $0.10) = 1.67 micro lots, which rounds to 0.02 lots. This means you buy 0.02 lots. Always round down to be conservative.
Using a Lot Size Calculator
Many brokers offer free lot size calculators. Input your account currency (USD), balance, risk percentage, stop loss in pips, and pair. The calculator gives you the exact lot size. For Brunei traders, ensure the calculator supports USD as base currency, as most local deposits are in USD.
