How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is the standard unit of trade size. In forex, one standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For Bangladesh traders with small deposits, micro lots (0.01 = 1,000 units) and nano lots (0.001 = 100 units) are more practical.
Why Lot Size Matters for Bangladesh Traders
Most Bangladesh traders start with deposits of BDT 5,000 to BDT 50,000 via bKash or Nagad. Using a standard lot (100,000 units) on such a small account would wipe it out with a 10-pip move. Correct lot sizing ensures you can survive losing streaks and continue learning.
The Basic Formula
Lot Size = (Account Balance × Risk Percentage) ÷ (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value). For example, if you have BDT 30,000 (about $330 USD), risk 2% (BDT 600), set a 20-pip stop loss, and trade EUR/USD where 1 pip = $0.10 for a mini lot, your lot size = ($6.60) ÷ (20 × $0.10) = 3.3 mini lots, or 0.33 standard lots. But for safety, round down to 0.3 lots.
Using a Lot Size Calculator
Most brokers offer free lot size calculators. Enter your account currency (BDT), risk percentage, stop loss in pips, and the pair you're trading. The calculator does the math instantly. This is especially useful for Bangladesh traders who trade on mobile phones via MT4 or MT5.
Practical Example for a BDT 10,000 Account
Suppose you have BDT 10,000 (approx. $110 USD). You risk 1% = BDT 100 ($1.10). You set a 20-pip stop loss on EUR/USD. Pip value for a micro lot is $0.10. Lot size = $1.10 ÷ (20 × $0.10) = 0.55 micro lots. So you trade 0.05 or 0.06 lots. This keeps your risk tiny.
