How to Calculate Lot Size in Forex
What is Lot Size in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of currency in forex trading. One standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For Armenian traders, the base currency is usually USD, so 1 standard lot = $100,000. Mini lots are 10,000 units, micro lots are 1,000 units, and nano lots are 100 units. Most Armenian retail traders use micro or mini lots to keep risk low.
The Lot Size Formula
The basic formula is: Lot size = (Account balance in USD × Risk percentage) / (Stop loss in pips × Pip value per lot). For example, if you have $2,000 USD and risk 2% ($40) with a 20-pip stop loss, and each pip is worth $10 for a standard lot, your lot size = $40 / (20 × $10) = 0.2 lots (2 mini lots).
Armenia-Specific Example
Imagine you deposit 500,000 AMD (about $1,250 USD) via Skrill. You decide to risk 2% ($25) on a EUR/USD trade with a 15-pip stop loss. Pip value for a standard lot is $10, so lot size = $25 / (15 × $10) = 0.17 lots. Using a micro lot broker, you can trade 0.17 lots, which is 17,000 units. Always round down to avoid exceeding your risk limit.
Using a Lot Size Calculator
Many brokers and websites offer free lot size calculators. Input your account currency (USD), balance, risk percentage, stop loss distance, and currency pair. For Armenian traders, ensure the calculator supports USD as base currency. Some calculators also show margin requirements based on leverage (e.g., 1:30).
